The House

Our 1½-storey bungalow sits at 476 Pederson Crescent, a short, unmarked lane connecting two of the three main streets that climb the giant, steep hill of Fredericton’s south side. Pederson’s lower end is laden with posh, $800,000+ estates; just a few hundred yards further, houses like ours sit on the real-estate market for months. Though a short walk from the city’s conjoined universities and pair of uptown shopping malls, our neighbourhood is only lightly trafficked, quiet and peaceful so that, oddly, we live like suburban folk in the heart of the city.
Ben acquired the house in June 2005 after his father received excessive insurance funds to repair his fire-damaged office building and apartment complex, the Maritime Building in New Glasgow, NS. He co-signed its mortgage to provide his son a place to live and a means of income—by renting out its spare bedrooms—while attending university. It was known as “Hayward House” for their last name until new tenant Ryan dubbed it The 476.
